Since 1st March, Ukrainian refugees have been able to use public transport for free to travel to their destinations in Switzerland or to travel through the country. The validity of the Alliance SwissPass is now being extended to all domestic journeys. Refugees who are taken in can travel by public transport for free until 31 May 2022 in Switzerland in 2nd class on all journeys within the Swiss travel pass network.
As of 1st March, Alliance SwissPass granted free travel on public transport to refugees from Ukraine for travel to their destinations in Switzerland or to travel through the country. Upon arrival, the refugees must complete various administrative procedures. The secretary of state for migration (SEM) will then provide them with several travel passes. Prior to that, the usual price was applicable for journeys within the country. Given the increasing number of people who have been taken into Switzerland temporarily with an “S” protection status permit, the question was increasingly being posed as to how practical this regulation was.
The Alliance SwissPass is very keen to put in place a simple, single solution for all domestic travel within Switzerland. In agreement with the SEM, the sector organisation has now decided that refugees who are taken in will be able to use public transport in Switzerland in 2nd class on all journeys within the travel pass network. Journeys outside the travel pass network and travel by 1st class are to be paid for at the usual rate. The following travel passes are valid:
For travel to and through Switzerland, the current solution continues to apply.
By taking this decision, Alliance SwissPass is taking on a matter expressed in parliament and supported by the Swiss Federal Assembly at the beginning of last week. In recent days, in some tariff regions, regional solutions had been put in place. This Swiss-wide regulation is to remain valid until 31 May 2022.
